In my four years at Ewenique Yarns, I have gained so much as a knitter and as a person. As we all know, 130 N. Bond Street is more than just a "yarn shop". It is a community of warm, caring and intelligent women sharing their lives, loves and losses. We are brought together from all corners through our mutual desire to knit, and find we have more in common than just our craft. To all those I have taught to knit, I hope you continue on. You have learned a lifelong skill. To all my fellow knitters, the best thing you can do is to share your knowledge and teach someone new to knit! As for me, I am busy making lemonade with the lemons life has given me at the moment. I promise to keep in touch with everyone, and you will see me occasionally on a Saturday or as life permits. Keep working on your Hanne's, two socks on two circulars, mitered squares and other projects. Maggie, I can't put into words what your friendship means to me. Robbyn has completed her Manos block of the month afghan, it truly is beautiful. Amy, Robbyn and Maggie put the fringe on Friday afternoon for a photo op. Robbyn is now back to her Fair Isle with a goal to finish in October. Robbyn is a new knitter, taking her first class in December. Way to go Robbyn!
Joan, one of our long time knitters has finshed her Judith, Long and Short of it. She used Seirra and the color is a soft peach/coral. The cropped sleeves look great and perfect for the upcoming fall weather. Wonderful job Joan.

First Sweater

Debbie has completed her first sweater, a beautiful top down raglan she knit for her husband. A man's sweater is a daunting challenge, the size is much larger than other sweaters we knit. Debbie has done a wonderful job!

In other news lots of swatches are on display for the cable knit along, starts Sept. 15.

The sock club is building so don't forget to sign up. For those out of towners that are reading this blog, you are invited to join as well. These items are shipped as part of the membership fee so all orders are welcome.

Cable KAL

Hi everyone -- Karen here. I saw a comment from the other day asking about the cable knit-a-long, so I thought I'd write what I know.

The sweater is columns of rope cables with seed stitch in between them. Have you seen the cream colored (large) swatch knit in Elsebeth Lavold's Classic Al that's been hanging around the shop? That's the stitch pattern for the sweater. It should be a nice introduction to cables if you haven't done them before. Not too complicated or fiddly.

You could do this sweater in any of a million different yarns. The design is shown knit in Manos, and of course Classic Al would make a beautiful sweater. My latest love is Waterlily -- have you seen this gorgeous yarn? I get tingly just thinking about it. The cabled sweater would be incredible knit in it. Pastaza and Cascade 220 would work, as well as a bunch of other yarns that aren't crossing my mind at the moment. (Did I mention Waterlily?) Rowan's Calmer would be a nice choice for those of you not into wool. The pattern calls for 18 sts/4", so any slightly heavy worsted weight would work well.

The dates for the KAL are Sept 15 & 29, Oct 13 & 27, with a finishing session lead by our incredible Maggie on Nov 3 -- all are Friday evenings. Hope you'll be able to make it!

Knitter's Night

Last night was one of the busiest Needle Exchanges I've seen in long time. All the regulars where there as well as some faces we haven't seen in awhile. Pat showed off her beautiful cardigan, makes you want to beg for winter doesn't it. Great job!

The cable challenge pattern was passed around and the variety of yarn choice for this knit-along is vast! It starts Sept 15.
Everyone was buzzing about socks. It seemed like everyone was knitting them on doubles, circulars, magic loop. Angela just finished sock class so she working on finishing her first pair. Nancy has completed her first pair of socks..she graciously modeled them for us. Wonderful job Nancy.
And now the info on the sock club. The idea is that every 2 months those that join the club will get yarn for a pair of socks and a pattern. Some of the yarn you have already seen at some point in the shop but there have been many new arrivals for this season. You can knit the socks anyway you want, you don't have to follow the pattern and you can chose your own needles (magic loop, circs, or doubles). The membership fee is $75 for six months or pay $150 for the year. The package will be delivered to your door and the surprise will have the fun. The other half is the finshed sock of course. The first installment for the club is mid Septemeber so hurry up and call or email the shop to sign up.

What a busy summer, so many people on vacation that stories from your favorite yarn shop have been slow coming. Maggie is back from baseball and the beach, Laura has been busy running the show and Debbie is still enjoying a few days of vaction.

Needle exhachange Thursday night was filled with vacation stories and plans for kids to go back to school. Which means time for us all to take some classes. The shop has been busy setting up a great fall line up of classes with more sock classes and some fun knit-alongs. A Finshing Friday is in the works and a Cable Challenge (don't you love the alliteration!). The idea of a sock club is being tossed around too. Post a comment if that's something you'd like to hear more about.

This is a wonderful toe up lace sock done on the magic loop. Meg did 2 socks at one time on the magic loop. Take Karen's Step up Socks and you too can bring some magic to your socks!
Don't forget about next Thursday Needle Exchange, school starts just after so it will be the last night without homework and permission slips. There is no Manos Monday in August so all you manos knitters bring your project in next Thursday at 7 for food, fun and festivity.

Charity Project for this Fall/Winter

As hot as it has been the past couple of days, it's hard to believe it will ever be cool again. But school starts in 3 weeks, and winter is just around the corner after that. For the last 3 winters we have been collecting handmade hats for the homeless in our county and Baltimore City. This year we have decided to concentrate on children. We would like to ask each customer to make one hat for a needy child. We have arrangements for them to be distributed to the elementary schools in our county. One ball of Cascade 220 or Encore will make 2 hats. Use up your scraps and go crazy with stripes, learn a new stitch, try some cables or intarsia. We have lots of patterns in the shop, or use an old favorite.
We all know knitters are the most generous crafters around! And won't it be nice to make something for someone who will really appreciate it! Keep track on the sidebar as our numbers grow.

Manic Manos Monday

Manos night was rather quiet this month but there were some lovely finshed projects to be shown off. Sara Rose helped out this evening, Laura worked up some Claudia's in a scarf for the non-sock knitters out there. Cindy finshed her afghan, now to be sewn by the finishing team! Amy started another one, to be finshed for Christmas.

Cindy was displaying her fabulous Entralac bag, done during the Friday night KAL in July. Look at the incredible felting job. Looks beautiful. Cindy was also one of the of raffle winners from Saturday's sale. Eloise was the other big winner, since she has now mastered socks on circulars we all know what she will be buying..... SOCK YARN!
Pat finshed this beautiful baby blanket, so soft and cuddly, pattern from Fiber Trends.

It's Almost That Time Again

Steppin' Up

Step up your socks class was a great class. Karen covered some new and interesting techniques last night. She taught us the Magic Loop, which Maggie has re-named the Magic Loops since it is actually 2 loops not 1. We also learned working 1 sock on a 12 inch circular, 1 sock on 2 circulars. And tada... 2 socks on 2 circulars. Not all of us mastered this but you can see Joan is doing quite well and Laura, master knitter that she is, got it too. The rest of us, well let's just say we are still an apprentice. Next week we cover short row heel and some other cool tricks.

Fall Fashion

As many of you know, Maggie and Laura have been meeting with our yarn reps, and choosing the new fall yarns and patterns.
Just look at the beautiful scarves and hats you can knit for this fall. You can clearly see that the style is versatile and perfect keeping you warm when you rake those leaves. Especially when the leaves haven't fallen yet, and this picture was probably taken in 90' weather. Remember, what was old is new again!

The Farm Fair is coming!

Hi everyone! This is Karen, and it's my first blog entry ever! I'm writing to encourage everyone to enter his or her knitting in the Harford County Farm Fair. Anything (everything!) that you have finished (not necessarily started, but finished) in the last year is eligible for entry. Let's show Harford County that knitting is alive and well and more beautiful than ever!

You can preregister your entry before July 15 (that's this Saturday!) by going to the Farm Fair website. From there, click on "Online Registration." (It's in blue, at the top of the page, in the middle of the list of links.) On the Online Registration page, scroll down to "open class registration." On the Open Class page, scroll down to knitting. :)

To learn what all the categories are about, download the Home Arts catalog. It's back on the main Farm Fair page. Scroll down all the way to the bottom. On the right there is a picture/link that says "Open Classes." (It looks like a drawing, but it's really a link.) It will open a PDF file which contains all of the info for the various classes (rules, etc). There is stuff to read at the start of the Home Arts section (page 12), and also stuff in the Knitting section (page 28).

When I first started entering things, I found the terminology confusing, so here are some definitions for you:
premium: cash prizes!
department: knitting, crochet, etc
class: categories like socks, scarf, etc. There are 42 classes for hand knitting!

What a crowd today. It seemed like everyone took a break from their gardens to stop by. Eloise has started her socks on circulars and it is going great. Starting very soon is Karen's Step up your Sock class. If you are a sock knitter and want to learn something new like this sign up now if there's still room and let Karen teach some new tricks! Allsion has the most adorable baby sweater almost finshed and will be a store model in just days. Cute Minnow Knits pattern done in Cotton Classic. Robin got some yummy Kid Silk Haze for beautiful lace shawl. Lots of laughs over the struggle with bobbles but we've got it now. Many other laughs as well, we all were stand up comedians today. Make sure you stop by Thursday night for the Needle Exchange and maybe our Saturday crowd will perform again. Have a safe and happy Fourth

Beautiful..Glamorous..Simply Pretty in Pink. The must be knitted project of the summer. Jan Metzner, knitting extraordinaire of about 1 year made this gorgeous sweater. A Gedifra pattern, knitted in Cotton Classic looks perfect alone or can be dressed up under a blazer this fall. Check out the incredible stitching for the mock turtleneck and the colorful I-cord straps on the shoulder. Wonderful job Jan! (applause to our lovely store model as well)

More long lost friends showing up on a slow Saturday. Welcome back Pam! We have missed you! Jan M. is almost done her hot pink Cotton Classic top. It has an awesome neckline. Anyone know how to P5TOG? It's called a bramble stitch. Jan will be glad to share the trick she learned doing this stitch. And now we know it's going to snow in June, Susan N. popped in, did a quick Pilates demo, and is back to work on her Santana tank.

Summer Must Have

Calling all crocheters and wannabees. We have found the summer bag. Made with Crystal Palace chenille and deco ribbon. Maggie has one started in pink and greens (very Lily), and Becky in orange and green (melon and kiwi). The bag is single crocheted and finished off with a plastic or bamboo handle. Come in and check out the pattern.

Great to see so many making progress on the entrelac bags. It is fun, once you get going. Great choice of color, Patti!

We're gonna miss "Ewe"

Rosemarie has left the building! We wish her a fond farewell, all the best Georgia has to offer and godspeed. She was a trememdous help picking out colors and loved putting together textures. Yes, we are going to miss you!!

Friday also started our next KAL - the entrelac bag. Joining us were the usual gang - Patsy, Cindy, Judy, Amy, Joan (come earlier, and you'll get to sit in the rocker) and some first timers like Angela, Jan, Becky, Alice, Susan. This is a fun bag once you figure out the pattern, and knowing it will be felted allows for worry free knitting.

The weather will be hot this week, come in for some cool knitting!

One Stitch Wonder

Bit of a quiet Saturday, but Susan the self proclaimed "One Stitch Wonder" stopped by and got everyone laughing. One day Susan, your turn will come. Faith was in and brought along a newbie, Leigh. Amy put the finishing touches on an absolutely fabulous baby sweater. Great job, Amy! It is now on display in the shop. Laura worked up a shawl/shoulder wrap combining Wool in the Woods Feelin' Fuzzy and Harmony in colorway "Thief in the Night". One hank of each, size 19 needles, cast on 40 and increase at the beginning of each row.
Ahead this week, we say good bye to our beloved Rosemarie, as she prepares to pack up and move even further south. Her last day is Friday, so try to stop by and wish her the best. Also Friday is the first night of Entrelac KAL. Another big group is planned, and if you haven't finished our summer tee, no problem, join us and we'll get you finished!

Super Saturday

Such a busy day, and so many familiar faces stopping in. Great to see Jan again, and the good news her husband is home safe and sound. Robbyn got back to work on her fair isle. Yes, brown is boring, but the fun is just around the corner. Word is Karen had a wonderful Entrelac class last week, and looks like everyone is gearing up to do those entrelac felted bags. Just one more week on the Summer Tee KAL, then on to the bag starting on June 16th. Garther up your scraps, or start fresh. Maggie is using Manos, Laura is using Donegal Tweed. Rosemarie has a sample done with Kureyon. Other samples in the store are done with Lopi and Cascade 220. Lots of choices.

It's Always Cool in Here!

What a hot day! But we stayed cool, knitting in the air conditioning. Some new books arrived. The popular new book "Wendy Knits" of wendyknits.net fame. Good knitting humor and easy patterns. Also "Morehouse Farm Merino Knits". Basic patterns worked with incredible yarns, and all those cute pictures of sheep!

Another Terrific Tuesday

Roberta stopped in and we now know what has been keeping her busy. She finished another summer tee, this one in Svale and her Manos throw. And while we were putting the finishing touches to her projects she picked out yarn to do two more sweaters. Adele is going to pamper herself with some Rowan Cotton Braid. Harriet continues on her 5th Manos throw.

Just a quiet evening knitting with friends - Patsy, Judy, Amy, Joan, Lisa and Laura. Most are still on the front of their sweaters, but Patsy has pulled ahead and finished front and back and is now working on sleeves. There is no KAL next Friday night, so everyone just keep knitting and we'll see you on June 3rd.
